USER TIPS ON THEFT REDUCTION & DAMAGE REDUCTION
STEPS TO PREVENT LAPTOP THEFT
- Use the provided cable and lock whenever the laptop is left unattended
- Do not leave the laptop in view in a car. Preferably, do not leave the laptop in a car at all.
- The laptop should not be left on a seat or on the floor in a public place.
- Give metal objects on your person to airport security before placing the laptop on the x-ray conveyor. This prevents theft while you are delayed with a hand wand scan.
- Keep the laptop in sight or contact while riding, or seated or standing for service in public.
- Do not leave the laptop unattended in a motel or hotel room, or residential areas where people unknown to you may visit in your absence and take the laptop.
LAPTOP HANDLING & STORAGE DON'TS TO AVOID DAMAGE
DO NOT:
- Allow unauthorized persons to use your laptop or leave where young children might misuse.
- Subject your laptop to physical punishment, such as dropping or bumping.
- Place heavy objects on your laptop.
- Place the laptop partially over the edge of a table or desk.
- Spill or allow liquids into your laptop or use your laptop in or near water.
- Disassemble or attempt to repair the laptop.
- Scratch, twist, hit or push the surface of your laptop LCD screen.
- Place any objects between the display and the keyboard or under the keyboard.
- Pick up or hold your laptop by the display, but do hold it by the bottom half.
- Turn the laptop over while the AC adapter is plugged in, this can break the adapter plug.
- Move the laptop while the hard drive is accessing data, i.e., indicator is blinking.
- Use or store your laptop where the temperature is below 41° F or above 95° F.
- Leave your laptop in your car.
- Use your laptop on the beach, where sand may get inside of it.
- Set up the laptop with the power cord or Ethernet cord stretch out over an area where someone may trip over it.
- Use the laptop on surfaces where the fan may be blocked, this may cause overheating.
- Put stickers on the cover of the laptop.
- Write or carve anything on the case of the laptop.
- Place the laptop closer than 5 inches to electrical appliances that generate a strong magnetic field, i.e., motor, magnet, TV, refrigerator, or large audio speakers.
- Put an operating cell phone on the laptop.
- Press on the middle part of the diskette drive or CD-ROM drive.
- Insert a diskette at an angle, this may damage the drive.
- Place more than one label on a diskette, or allow the label to be loose.
- Touch the lens on the CD-ROM tray.
- Close the CD-ROM tray until the CD-ROM clicks into the center pivot of the drive.
- Connect the modem to a PBX or other digital telephone extension line.
- Leave connected to telephone line during electrical storms.
- Replace battery with other than recommended by laptop manufacturer.
- Check the laptop as baggage; give to bellman or valet, ship or mail.
CARRYING THE LAPTOP SAFELY
- Do not move the laptop when the hard drive is accessing data, i.e. indicator blinking.
- Remove disks from the CD-ROM drive or diskette drive before carrying.
- Power off the laptop or enter suspend or hibernation mode, then close the LCD.
- Unplug all external cables and cords and make sure all doors and covers are closed.
- Use the carrying case provided that has adequate cushion and protection. Do not place in a backpack or a tightly packed suitcase or bag to prevent LCD damage.
- Do not carry the laptop un-covered in inclement weather.
CLEANING THE LAPTOP
- Do not spray cleaner directly on the display or keyboard, or use a vacuum cleaner.
- Use a soft cloth moistened with non-alkaline detergent to wipe the laptop exterior.
- Gently wipe the LCD with a dry, soft cloth.
- The keyboard may cause a scratch-like stain on the LCD if the cover is pressed from the outside. Wipe the stain with a dry soft cloth. If necessary, moisten the cloth with LCD cleaner and wipe the stain again. Dry the LCD before closing it.
